MONTREAL — Columbus Crew midfielder Danny Szetela scored on a 16th-minuteheader and Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Chris Seitz stopped 12 shots Saturday inthe United States’ 1-1 draw with South Korea in the Under 20 World Cup openerfor both teams.
After Szetela’s header off Sal Zizzo’s cross, the South Koreans equalized inthe 38th minute on a goal by Shin Young-rok and finished with a 13-7 advantagein shots.
Much of the announced sellout crowd of 55,800 at Olympic Stadium left afterPoland’s 1-0 upset of Brazil earlier in the day, leaving the stands about halffull of mostly South Korean fans.
The United States took the lead after defender Tony Beltran blocked whatlooked to be a sure goal by Shin. Zizzo led the counter down the right side andsent a cross that bounced once before Szetela dove to drive a header into thenet.
The goal appeared to energize the South Koreans, who created severalchances, the best by Shim Young-sung in the 25th minute that forced Seitz tomake a diving grab.
The South Korean pressure paid off when Shim slipped the ball through thepenalty area to a streaking Shin, whose sliding kick beat an onrushing Seitz.
Shim nearly gave South Korea the lead early in the second half, driving pasttwo U.S. defenders before hitting a 20-yard shot off the far post.
The Americans’ best chance to score in the second half came off a play byFreddy Adu, who dribbled into the penalty area and set up Julian Valentin. Hisshot was blocked by South Korean defender Ki Sung-yueng.
Seitz maintained the draw for the U.S. with consecutive saves in the 87thminute on Lee Chung-yong Lee and Ha Tae-goon.
