DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA (TICKER) — NASCAR announced on Tuesday that it fined driver Greg Biffle $5,000 and placed him on probation until December 31 for failing to fulfill his post-race media obligations on Saturday following the NASCAR Busch Series race at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis. Per NASCAR rules, after a race has been completed, the winning driver, as well as the second and third-place finishers, plus the highest-finishing rookie of the year candidate must report for post-race interviews. Biffle finished second in Saturday’s Kroger 200.

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh defensive back Elijah Fields was suspended for theupcoming season Tuesday by coach Dave Wannstedt for an unspecified violation ofteam rules. Fields played in eight games as a freshman, mostly on special teams, and wasexpected to compete for a starting job this season. “Although we have suspended Elijah for the season, he will remain part ofour program and practice,” Wannstedt said in a statement. “We will continue todemand that he work hard on the field and in the classroom so that he can be animportant part of our program’s future.”

OTTAWA — The Ottawa Senators and Chris Kelly avoided salary arbitration byagreeing to a $1.26 million, one-year contract Tuesday. Kelly has spent the past two years in Ottawa, where he made $725,000 lastseason. He’s coming off a season in which he enjoyed career highs with 15 goalsand 23 assists. He had three goals and four assists while playing in all 20 postseasongames. He has 25 goals and 43 points in 168 regular-season games.

TORONTO – Fans awaiting David Beckham’s first scheduled Major League Soccer match for the Los Angeles Galaxy have been warned there will be no refunds if the injured English star does not play against Toronto FC. Beckham, nursing a sore left ankle, missed his third Galaxy match in a row on Tuesday in a Superliga affair at league rival FC Dallas. His Galaxy debut came as a 78th-minute substitute in a match against Chelsea 10 days ago. Since then, the 32-year-old former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder has sat out two home Superliga matches against Mexican clubs and been unable to train with his new teammates. |
