TORONTO — Maurice Edu scored and the Red Bulls added an own-goal as TorontoFC snapped a 12-game winless streak by defeating New York 2-1 on Thursday,preventing the Red Bulls from clinching a playoff berth.

Edu gave Toronto the lead in the 18th minute with his fourth goal of theseason. Marvell Wynne sent a ball through New York’s back line that Edu drovelow and hard past Red Bulls goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus.

Toronto (6-15-6), playing in its second to last home game at BMO Field, wentahead 2-0 in the 66th minute when Wynne crossed the ball in from the right wing.Red Bulls defender Chris Leitch reached a foot out to clear the ball, butinstead sent it into the net.

Dane Richards scored the lone goal for New York (11-11-6), connecting on acorner kick from Dave van den Bergh in the 75th minute. The Red Bulls, whooutshot Toronto 11-6, are just 1-1-3 in September.

The win was Toronto’s first since a 2-1 victory at Salt Lake on July 4. Theteam had been 0-8-4 since then, dropping to the bottom of the EasternConference. Toronto had been outscored 17-3 over that span, including anMLS-record 824 minutes without a goal.

Toronto is almost guaranteed to miss the playoffs in its inaugural MLSseason. It needs to win its remaining three regular-season games and make up alarge goal differential on the Chicago Fire, which currently holds the eighthplayoff spot.
