LOS ANGELES (TICKER) — U.S. National Team forward Landon Donovan on Friday was chosen as Honda Player of the Year for the fourth time in his career. The award, which goes to the best player on the National Team, is voted on by the American Sports media. Donovan received 413 points, besting runner-up Tim Howard (122) by nearly 300 points. Carlos Bocanegra rounded out the top three with 105 points. Donovan leads the National Team with nine goals scored, including a hat-trick against Ecuador and four goals during the CONCACAF Gold Cup this summer. His penalty kick against Mexico – his 34th career goal – provided the U.S. its fourth Gold Cup title and tied him with Eric Wynalda as the top scorer in the U.S. National Team history. The 25-year-old Donovan has 96 caps and is the all-time assist leader for the United States with 27. This year, he broke Cobi Jones’ long-standing record for points in a year, collecting 22 points – nine goals and four assists – to break Jones’ record of 21 points set in 2000. Donovan became the youngest Honda Player of the Year Award winner in 2002 and became the only player in the now 17-year history of the award to win the award three times when he won again in 2003 and 2004.
