EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Juan Pablo Angel scored two goals to lead the NewYork Red Bulls to a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday night. The Red Bulls (12-11-6) clinched third place in the MLS’ Eastern Conference,while the Wizards (10-12-7) missed an opportunity to take the conference’s finalplayoff spot. Kansas City is tied with Chicago, with both teams having one gameleft. Angel’s first goal came when he converted a penalty kick in the 19th minute.It came after Jose Burciaga Jr.’s hand touched a crossing pass, and Angel’sconversion made him 5-for-5 in penalty kick chances this season. Kansas City tied it 90 seconds later when Davy Arnaud took a direct freekick from 30 yards out and it was headed in by Jack Jewsbury for his second goalof the season. The Red Bulls, though, regained the lead 3 minutes later whenAngel scored his 19th goal of the year, beating goaltender Kevin Hartman. Kansas City then had three opportunities to tie the score in the secondhalf, but Red Bulls goalie Jon Conway — who had six saves on the night — came upbig each time. The Wizards’ first chance came early in the second half, when Red Bullsdefender Carlos Mendes pulled down Scott Sealy in the penalty area. EddieJohnson took the penalty kick for the Wizards, but was stopped by Conway. Then, in the 75th minute, Conway stopped Sealy at point-blank range. AndConway sealed the win with a diving save on a shot by Johnson in the closingminute.
