PASADENA, Calif. — Nate Longshore’s return wasn’t enough to get Californiaback on the winning track. Having Patrick Cowan back did the trick for UCLA.

With Cal in UCLA territory, Alterraun Verner intercepted Longshore’s passand sprinted 76 yards to the end zone with 1:33 remaining to seal Saturday’s30-21 victory over the No. 10 Golden Bears.

Kahlil Bell rushed for 142 yards on 22 carries and Kai Forbath kicked threefield goals as UCLA (5-2, 4-0 Pac-10) remained perfect in conference play.

The loss almost certainly cost Cal (5-2, 2-2), which came up short at theend for the second week in a row, any chance at the Pac-10 title.

Cowan, back for the Bruins after being sidelined by a knee injury, went18-for-27 for 161 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Breazell had four receptionsfor 68 yards, gained 21 yards on three carries, and threw a touchdown pass forUCLA.

The loss overshadowed a big day by the Bears’ DeSean Jackson, who had ninereceptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

Longshore, who missed the last game because of a sprained ankle, finished22-of-34 for 232 yards and three touchdowns, but with three interceptions. AfterVerner’s pick, Dennis Keyes intercepted Longshore’s throw in the waning secondsand the Bruins ran out the clock.

The Bruins were coming off a bye that followed their 20-6 upset by NotreDame. UCLA was down to third-string quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson for mostof that game after starter Ben Olson went out with a knee injury and Cowanalready sidelined by his injury.

Cal was trying to bounce back from a 31-28 loss to Oregon State that knockedthe Bears out of the No. 2 ranking on a day when a victory would have given themthe No. 1 spot. With Longshore out, redshirt freshman Kevin Riley filled in andhis scramble on the final play of the game allowed the clock to run out and costthe Bears a chance at a tying field goal.

The Bruins moved ahead 23-21 on 27-yard field goal with 3:08 to play. TheBears appeared to be driving toward a potential winning field goal when Vernermade his dramatic interception return.

Jackson had given the Bears a 21-20 lead when he hauled in a 2-yard TD passfrom Longshore late in the third quarter.

UCLA went ahead 20-14 on a trick play early in the third quarter. Breazellgot the ball on a reverse, pulled up and threw a 29-yard pass to DominiqueJohnson in the back of the end zone.

The Bears tried their own version of the play later in the quarter, but theBruins’ secondary didn’t bite and Jackson was sacked for a 2-yard loss.

Longshore threw a pair of touchdown passes in the first half to stake theBears to a 14-13 lead. UCLA got a pair of field goals by Forbath and a shortscoring pass by Cowan to keep it close.

Cal missed a chance to put three points on the board on the final play ofthe half when Jordan Kay’s 44-yard field goal attempt strayed wide left.

Jackson, all alone behind the UCLA secondary, caught Longshore’s pass instride on a 39-yard scoring pass to put the Bears up 14-10 midway through thesecond quarter. The Bruins narrowed the gap to one point on Forbath’s 28-yarder5:42 before halftime.

UCLA took a brief 10-7 lead on Cowan’s 2-yard touchdown pass to LoganPaulsen. Bell set up the score one play earlier when he darted through thedefense on a 64-yard run, the longest of his career, down to the 2.

Longshore’s 21-yard TD pass to Craig Stevens to cap a 71-yard drive on theBears’ second possession gave them a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.The Bruins answered with a long drive of their own, but it stalled and Forbathkicked a 32-yarder.

UCLA linebacker Christian Taylor was taken off the field in the fourthquarter. He apparently had a concussion and was taken to the hospital for tests.
