SAN FRANCISCO (TICKER) — Major League Soccer has apparently settled on Seattle as its next expansion city, according to a report on SI.com.

Citing an undisclosed source, the new franchise is targeted to begin play in the 2009 season. The league will make the official announcement in two weeks, according to the source.

The Emerald City already has a soccer team – the Sounders – who play in the United Soccer League’s First Division, which is one level below MLS.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Gavin Clinton, a second-half sub for Cobi Jones, scoredon a header deep in the penalty area and led the Los Angeles Galaxy to a 1-0victory over the Kansas City Wizards on Thursday night.

In the 80th minute, Clinton took a long pass up from teammate Mike Randolphand redirected the ball with his head from 5 yards into the right corner of thenet and past a fallen Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman for his third goal of theseason.

LONDON (Ticker) — David Beckham’s father has suffered a heart attack and the soccer star is flying back to the Britain on Thursday to be at his hospital bedside, his spokesman said.

The former England captain was seen boarding a flight in Los Angeles on Wednesday night after his father was taken ill. He is expected to arrive at Heathrow before lunchtime on Thursday.

LOS ANGELES (TICKER) — Los Angeles Galaxy club president Alexi Lalas insists David Beckham will return to action when they, not he, decide he is fully fit.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United midfielder has been sidelined by a knee strain which ruled him out of England’s recent Euro 2008 qualifiers with Israel and Russia.

“Just because David says he is healthy, that does not mean he is healthy,” Lalas told the Daily Telegraph. “When we are confident that he is 100 percent, physically and mentally, at that time we will see him on the field and not before.”


SALT LAKE CITY — Kyle Brown scored in the 30th minute to give Real SaltLake a 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night.

Salt Lake (5-13-8) ended a two-game losing streak and a four-game winlessstreak with the victory. The Rapids (7-11-8) extended their winless streak tofour as they continue to drop out of the playoff picture.

TORONTO — Jason Garey and Jacob Thomas scored second-half goals and theColumbus Crew posted a 2-1 victory Saturday that snapped their winless streak atseven games and extended Toronto FC’s skid to 11 games.

FRISCO, Texas — Carlos Ruiz scored in the final seconds to help FC Dallastie the Chicago Fire 1-1 on Thursday night.

Ruiz dribbled past two Fire defenders and chipped in a shot from about fiveyards away into an open Chicago net in the 93rd minute for his seventh goal ofthe season. Clarence Goodson assisted on the score.
