PITTSBURGH — Penguins co-owner Mario Lemieux will get $21 million as partof the team’s settlement of its 1990s bankruptcy, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazettereported Friday. Lemieux was owed $32 million in deferred compensation when he retired as aplayer in 1997. He won’t get additional money on the contract and is believed tobe the only unsecured creditor to get less than 100 percent of money owed. California businessman Ron Burkle, who shares control of the franchise withLemieux, and the other investors who purchased a piece of it when it came out ofbankruptcy in 1999, will be given varying percentages of their original outlayas part of the refinancing. The distribution of money comes with a stipulationthat if the team experiences major financial problems, the investors must puttheir money back into the franchise. The refinancing won’t not affect theownership structure of the team. Lemieux couldn’t immediately be reached for comment. Team spokesman TomMcMillan declined to discuss the settlement and refinancing.

CALGARY, Alberta — Daymond Langkow had two goals and an assist as theCalgary Flames erased an early deficit and beat the Los Angeles Kings 4-3Thursday night. Langkow’s 200th NHL goal at 6:11 of the second period tied it 2-2. AfterCraig Conroy gave the Flames the lead at 11:33, Calgary made some history. On a power play, Kristian Huselius slid the puck over to Langkow, who zippeda high shot over Jean-Sebastien Aubin’s glove from the top of the crease. Thatmarked the seventh consecutive game to start the season that a Flames playerscored two goals, breaking a record held by the Ottawa Senators, whoaccomplished the feat in 1917 and 1920. After Langkow opened the season with consecutive two-goal games, Huselius,Matthew Lombardi, Huselius again, and Jarome Iginla followed. Langkow’s secondon Thursday was his 500th NHL point. Huselius also scored for the Flames (3-2-2), who kicked off their seven-gamehomestand with their first home victory in three tries. |

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Raffi Torres scored twice, including the go-ahead goal ona circus shot with 8:05 to play, and the Edmonton Oilers beat the PhoenixCoyotes 4-2 on Thursday night to snap a four-game losing streak. Kyle Brodziak and Shawn Horcoff also scored for the Oilers, who won for thefirst time in four road games despite managing only a season-low 18 shots ongoal. Phoenix goalie Alex Auld kicked away Alex Hemsky’s shot from the slot intothe left faceoff circle. Torres, skating away from the goal, reached back overhis left shoulder and swept the puck off Auld’s left pad and into the net togive Edmonton a 3-2 lead. Horcoff added an empty-net goal with 52 seconds remaining, just as Auldreached the bench after leaving the crease. SAN JOSE, Calif. — Matt Ellis put the Red Wings ahead with his first NHLgoal on a no-look backhand with 12:26 to play, and Detroit rallied for a 4-2victory over the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night in a rematch of last season’splayoffs. Pavel Datsyuk scored during a two-man advantage moments later, and ChrisOsgood made 23 saves as the Red Wings earned their fourth victory in six games.Henrik Zetterberg extended his goal-scoring streak to five games, and NiklasKronwall also scored. Mike Grier and Jonathan Cheechoo scored and Evgeni Nabokov stopped 23 shotsfor the homesick Sharks, who play just three of their first 12 games at theTank. TORONTO — Nik Antropov’s goal with 27.6 seconds left lifted the TorontoMaple Leafs to a 3-2 comeback win over the Florida Panthers on Thursday night. Antropov hammered home a rebound from the left circle after goalie CraigAnderson kicked out a fat rebound on a shot from Pavel Kubina. The goal capped a bizarre sequence. Maple Leafs defenseman Ian White droppedthe gloves in the Florida zone and tried to goad Jozef Stumpel into a fightafter Stumpel cross-checked him from behind near the boards. Stumpel refused tofight, all while Florida defenseman Jay Bouwmeester broke down the ice andnearly scored on Vesa Toskala — faking out the goalie but missing the open netfrom an acute angle. Toronto skated right back down the ice and netted the winner. It was thefourth consecutive two-point game for Antropov. Bryan McCabe and Jason Blake also scored for the Leafs (3-3-2), who trailed2-0 after the first period. Mats Sundin had two assists. |

OTTAWA — Jason Spezza scored his first goal of the season, Nick Folignogave his father a big nod after his first career goal and the Ottawa Senatorsbeat the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 on Thursday night. After Alex Kovalev scored Montreal’s second power-play goal of the game12:51 into the third to tie it at 3, Spezza brought the Scotiabank Place crowdof 20,019 to its feet as he restored Ottawa’s lead 0:24 later. The most memorable moment of the game, however, happened when Foligno gavethe Senators a 2-1 lead with a wraparound goal four minutes into the secondquarter. After scoring his first goal in eight games, Foligno brought back afamiliar sight — the Foligno Leap. As a tribute to his father, the 19-year-old rookie mimicked former NHLplayer Mike Foligno’s signature goal celebration. He brought up his knees andjumped as he leaned forward clenching both fists. Wade Redden, who assisted on Foligno’s goal, scored on a power play 0:31 inand Dany Heatley recorded his 400th career point with his seventh goal of theseason. WASHINGTON — Bill Guerin scored his first three goals with the Islanders,two on the power play, to lead New York to a 5-2 victory over the WashingtonCapitals on Thursday night. Guerin, who has a team-high six assists after signing a two-year, $9 milliondeal and earning the title of team captain, netted one goal in the first periodand two in the third. BOSTON — Marco Sturm scored two goals Thursday night as the Bruins beatTampa Bay 4-1 in their home opener to give coach Claude Julien a victory in hisBoston debut. Tim Thomas made 34 saves and Peter Schaefer and Mark Stuart also scored forBoston, which has won four of five since losing the season opener. It’s a goodstart for the team that hasn’t won a playoff series since 1999 and has gonethrough five coaches in 4 1/2 years, one of them a season lost to the lockout. Johan Holmqvist stopped 20 shots for Tampa Bay, and Brad Richards scored theLightning’s only goal. Martin Biron made 38 saves in his second straight shutout and Philadelphiaproved again it is back as a Stanley Cup contender, beating the New JerseyDevils 4-0 on Thursday night. Mike Richards, Sami Kapanen, Jim Dowd and Joffrey Lupul scored for theFlyers, who won their fourth straight. The chants in the third period started early for Martin Biron, who wassensational again and became the first Flyers goalie to record back-to-backshutouts since Brian Boucher in 2001. The Flyers (5-1) have won the first three games of a four-game homestand andare on their first four-game winning streak since March 2006. |

ATLANTA — Thrashers goalie Kari Lehtonen injured his troublesome groinagain Thursday night and had to leave a game against the New York Rangers. After covering a shot at the side of the net with 8:30 remaining in theopening period, Lehtonen got up slowly and, bending over, skated toward theAtlanta bench. He slammed his stick against the boards in frustration beforeheading to the locker room. |
