ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Bills finally built a lead they couldn’t squander,and upstaged Willis McGahee in his first game back to Buffalo.

Making good on an opportunity to secure the starting job, rookie quarterbackTrent Edwards went 11-of-21 for 153 yards and engineered five scoring drives inhelping Buffalo to a 19-14 win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

The Bills’ defense did its part, limiting the Ravens to two scores despitesix drives into Buffalo territory. That included Baltimore’s final drive whenKyle Boller couldn’t convert a fourth-and-1 from the Buffalo 49, his passfalling just out of the reach of Musa Smith with 1:49 remaining.

The Bills improved to 2-4 and eased memories of their last outing, a 25-24loss to Dallas in which Buffalo squandered an eight-point lead in the final 20seconds. It was the second game Buffalo lost in the final seconds after a 15-14loss to Denver in the season opener.

Rian Lindell hit four field goals, including a 41-yarder, and Marshawn Lynchscored on a 1-yard plunge, giving the Bills a 19-7 lead late in the thirdquarter.

DETROIT — Jeff Garcia suddenly had trouble protecting the football, and theDetroit Lions took full advantage.

The Lions scored touchdowns after Garcia’s two fumbles, including widereceiver Calvin Johnson’s 32-yard run midway through the fourth quarter, to beattheir former teammate and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-16 on Sunday.

Detroit (4-2) pulled within a game of idle Green Bay in the NFC North, whileTampa Bay (4-3) lost a chance to move past idle Carolina in the NFC South.

Garcia, who played in Detroit for one forgettable season two years ago,didn’t have a turnover in his first six games with the Bucs.

Perhaps pressing against one of his former teams, he botched a handoff inDetroit territory in the first quarter. He also mishandled a snap on afirst-and-goal when the Bucs were a yard away from pulling within two pointsearly in the fourth.

NEW ORLEANS — Forget Reggie Bush’s blazing speed and flashy moves. Hisunderrated power and grit turned a day of frustration into one of celebrationfor the New Orleans Saints.

His feet churning and body squirming as three Atlanta tacklers met him onthe 2-yard line, Bush spun free and dived across the goal line on a crucialthird-and-goal screen pass. His touchdown lifted New Orleans to a 22-16 victoryover the Falcons on Sunday.

Bush threw the ball into the second deck of the Louisiana Superdome afterthe score. While fans chanted his name in celebration, Bush took a handoff on a2-point conversion, raced to the sideline and dived for the pylon to put theSaints (2-4) up by six points with 5:04 remaining.

When the Falcons’ next drive stalled, they punted with under 2 minutes to goand all of their timeouts left. Guess who clinched it with a first-down run twoplays later?

Bush’s 7-yard gain on second-and-6 allowed New Orleans to run out the clock.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Priest Holmes completed his improbable comeback Sunday,returning to the Kansas City Chiefs’ lineup nearly two years after a seriousneck injury threatened the three-time Pro Bowl running back’s career.

Holmes, once a dynamic runner who became the franchise’s career leader inyards rushing and touchdowns, was added to the Chiefs’ roster and activated forthe first time since Oct. 30, 2005, for their road game against the rivalOakland Raiders.

HOUSTON — The Tennessee Titans needed every one of Rob Bironas’ NFL-recordeight field goals to hold off the Houston Texans on Sunday.

Bironas kicked a 29-yard field goal, his eighth of the game, with 2 secondsleft to lead the Titans to a 38-36 win.

The kick foiled a spirited comeback attempt by the Texans who scored 29points in the fourth quarter, capped by a 53-yard touchdown pass from SageRosenfels to Andre’ Davis to take a 36-35 lead with 1:06 to play.

The Titans faced a third-and-10 at their own 37 when Kerry Collins foundRoydell Williams on a 46-yard pass that set up the winning kick.


NEW ORLEANS — Byron Leftwich, making his first start for the AtlantaFalcons since joining the club a month ago, went down with an injured rightankle on his first series of the third quarter Sunday against the New OrleansSaints on Sunday.

He gingerly walked off the field with help from trainers as Joey Harrington,who lost his starting job to Leftwich this past week, came into the game.

LANDOVER, Md. — Kurt Warner started at quarterback Sunday for the ArizonaCardinals against the Washington Redskins, one week after tearing a ligament inhis non-throwing elbow.

Warner took the field with a black, bulky brace on his left elbow, theresult of several attempts during the week to find an apparatus that would causethe least amount of discomfort.

Warner was hurt in last week’s loss to Carolina and was replaced by TimRattay, who had been signed just a few days earlier. This week, the Cardinalswere preparing a simplified game plan for Rattay and another new signing, TimHasselbeck, in case Warner couldn’t play.

LONDON - West Ham rode their luck to beat Sunderland 3-1 on Sunday thanks in large part to a freak own goal by goalkeeper Craig Gordon.

A hard-fought match looked to be turning in Sunderland’s favour when Kenwyne Jones cancelled out Carlton Cole’s first half strike.

Then, with time running out at Upton Park, Nolberto Solano’s shot struck a post and then rebounded into the net off Gordon, who was lying prone after his attempted save.

ROME - AC Milan chief Adriano Galliani claimed Sunday that the club’s Brazilian playmaker Kaka deserves to be named world player of the year.

Kaka has already received one award this season for being the best player during last season’s Champions League, where AC Milan emerged victorious.

And now he is the big favourite to be awarded the Ballon d’Or in Paris on December 2.

LAHORE, Pakistan - Asian Cup champions Iraq take on Pakistan here Tuesday when they open their campaign to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.

Iraq won the Asian Cup title in July to give their war-plagued country rare sporting joy, and now hope to qualify for the World Cup to be held in South Africa in three years’ time.

The encounter will be the eighth clash between Pakistan and Iraq, although the last between the two was 10 years ago.
